Best Buy Scholarships
College Funding for the Geek Squad
The ancestor to Best Buy was the Sound of Music. From 1966 to 1983, Sound of Music regularly expanded its products to include a rapidly growing audio and video business. The business embraced the technological revolution. In 1983, the corporation was given its current name. Fortune has rated the company’s stocks among some of the best and the Best Buy “label” appears across many international landscapes.
Currently the corporation is one of the most sought out for its selection of affordable electronic equipment, including cell phones, video and entertainment equipment, cameras, computers, audio equipment for home and auto, CDs, DVDs, software, even home appliances. The company has even fashioned its unique services into what they affectionately call The Geek Squad. On top of the retail business, Best Buy also provides computer maintenance and repair services.
Best Buy Scholarships
Considering the fact that many of the employees at Best Buy are between the ages of 17 and 25, it’s a matter of course that the company would encourage higher education.
Best Buy Scholarships are doled out to well over 1500 students annually. There are different levels of awards that cover community, online/”remote,” and national categories. Students who live near a Best Buy store or those who shop online and don’t live in a region with a store may all compete for $1,500 scholarships: 100 awarded to “online” applicants, two per store for those who live near a location. Best Buy national scholarships are carefully awarded to over a dozen students. These generous grand prizes are $10,000 prizes payable to the college or university of the winner’s choosing. Applicants must be high school seniors.
A significant part of Best Buy’s corporate ethos is their philanthropic funding for educational programs that fall outside the over $1.5 million already given for scholarships. The Te@ch program awards large chunks of grant change to K-12 schools. Eligible institutions are those who demonstrate “creative use of interactive technology.”
Community Service Programs
Best Buy, like all good corporations, has chosen its service partners. The company provides volunteer services and funds to the American Red Cross, Toys for Teens, a spin-off to Toys for Tots, and the United Way.
