Kirby sales people usually do the sales by themselves. I think if you are that worried you should contact the local police and tell them your story. This way it would be a matter of record. Did they use your facilities? Bathroom, kitchen? If so they were definitely scoping you out. Can you borrow someones dog for a little while? Your job is to protect you and yours. I would also contact Kirby and ask if their sales people are in your area.

I have heard of that sales tactic many times over the decades. Right down to needing one more sale ( a very common sympathy pitch) to calling or having the supervisor show up.
Since the routine is so typical I would say you are at less risk than if you let other salespeople, any strangers, in to your home.
I bet your friend can’t tell you where or who was robbed because it is not exactly true. It is just a story. I have heard the same story and I probably live across the country from you. It happened to somebody somewhere but it is generally an urban myth.
But you seem deeply bothered so don’t be afraid to call the police and ask if they have any reports of people being robbed after the Kirby sales people were at their house. I bet they will say no.
