Scholarship program 2011-2012 from HONDA Malaysia Sdn Bhd and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)

HONDA Malaysia Sdn Bhd and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) are looking for 20 determined, underprivileged youths for the Honda Dreams Fund (HDF) 2011 intake.

The company is encouraging youths aged between 17 and 24 who have dreams to fulfill but lack the funds to do it, to apply for the scholarship.

“It is always our hope to assist deserving underprivileged Malaysian students by providing the scholarship to young and aspiring minds. HDF is now into its fifth year. By this year, we will have 100 HDF scholars in total,” Honda Malaysia CEO Yoichiro Ueno told a news conference to announce the launch of the 2011 intake on Tuesday.

The scholarship is open to those who have at least completed and passed Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia or Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia examination, with a combined household income of less than RM1,500 per month.

It is also a non-binding full scholarship and scholars are free to select their course of study at the institution of their choice. Successful applicants will also receive RM500 allowance per month and those living away from home will have their rental expenses covered too.

Honda Malaysia allocates about RM1 million for the HDF programme each year.

Applications for the scholarship opened on Jan 5 and since then, roadshows have been held in 13 locations throughout seven states to reach out to more underprivileged youths, especially those in rural communities. To date, close to 700 applications have been received.

The roadshows were held in Sabah, Negeri Sembilan, Malacca, Sarawak, Johor, Perlis and lastly, the Klang Valley. During the roadshows, on-the-spot applications were taken when applicants were interviewed instead of having to send in 500 word essays.

Ueno said this was better for students who are not so good at articulating their dreams in words.

Interested applicants may download the forms from the HDF website at www.honda.com.my/hdf. Closing date for applications is March 31
